Manslaughter Charges After Fight Behind Bakery Turns Fatal

A jury decided this week to charge a Dorchester man for his alleged role in the death of a Quincy resident.

Boston, MA - A 23-year old Dorchester man faces manslaughter charges, a Suffolk County Grand Jury determined this week.

Quincy resident Brian Hingston, 44, died in a fight behind an Adams Street bakery, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said in a joint statement on the indictments Wednesday.

The indictments, returned Monday, charge Bryan McElhinney, 23, with manslaughter and aggravated assault and battery in connection with the April 17 incident.

According the findings of a Boston Police Department investigation, Hingston, McElhinney and others were celebrating a friend’s birthday on the night of April 16 into the morning of April 17. The celebration devolved into a fistfight between two people in the group in the parking lot of the Greenhill Bakery. Neither Hingston nor McElhinney was initially involved in that fight, police say their investigation showed.

Then, McElhinney apparently joined in and struck another man.

"At this point, the evidence suggests, Hingston attempted to intervene and McElhinney struck him once in the face. Hingston fell to the ground, hit his head, and never regained consciousness," police said.

He was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.

McElhinney will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on July 8.
