MA's 150 Highest-Paid State Employees In 2019

Anyone know if the University of Massachusetts is hiring? The public university system is once again home to the vast majority of the highest earners on the state payroll, according to state data.

The top 26 highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts in 2019 were UMass workers, including everyone who made more than $400,000 from the state. Eighty-nine of the top 100 and 115 of the top 150 were from UMass.

UMass Chancellor and Senior VP of Health Sciences Michael Collins was the highest-paid state employee yet again, making $1,096,430.75. He has been the highest- or second-highest-paid state employee every year since at least 2010.

The only two non-UMass state employees in the top 70 were Chief Medical Examiner Mindy Hull (No. 27,) MBTA General Manager Steven Poftak (No. 66.) Workers in for both those agencies, as well as State Police and Departments of Public and Mental Health helped fill out the top 150.

Employee pay includes base pay, overtime pay, buyouts, and "other pay," according to the state comptroller's website. You can see that breakdown here, along with how much other state employees made.
