Mayor Pitches Surveillance Cameras for Downtown Crossing

Do you think it's a good idea?

Boston, MA - Mayor Marty Walsh is requesting Boston's Common Council accept donated funds and designate them so that the Boston Police Department can set up video monitoring at Downtown Crossing.

According to a letter shared by a Boston Globe reporter, Walsh wants councilors to earmark a donation for the Boston Police Department to purchase cameras and video monitoring equipment for the high-traffic area. The donation comes from the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District, according to the letter, and would not exceed $250,000.

The busy cross-section of Washington and Winter Streets has been the site of multiple recent thefts, whose perpetrators police are actively seeking. That includes an armed robbery at TD Bank and a man who "forcefully grabbed a disabled victim's wallet," according to police.
