Fixed! MBTA Says Credit, Debit Fares Again Available

It was cash-only earlier today, and nobody was happy about it.

Boston, MA - The Mass. Bay Transit Authority says it's again able to take credit and debit card payments for fares this afternoon, after a systems failure Tuesday morning ignited a firestorm from riders forced to pay in cash or walk to find a retail location.

Just after 1 p.m., the MBTA tweeted it had resolved the problem, which has been prompting angry messages from riders since mid-morning.

The MBTA issued an alert that credit and debit card sales are "temporarily unavailable" -- not just at its station kiosks, but online, as well.

The transit authority cited a credit application outage.

Credit and debit transactions can still be made at any retail sales location, the MBTA said. Here's a list of locations.

Needless to say, riders are not happy about the news.

The MBTA first reported the credit system outage around 10:30 a.m., and the probably appears set to persist into lunch hour travel times.
