New Low? Donald Trump Calls Elizabeth Warren 'Pocahontas' in Interview
The presumptive Republican nominee hits Massachusetts' senator on Native American ancestry, past controversy.

Boston, MA - In his ongoing feud with U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Donald Trump has managed to make derogatory comments about yet another group.
The presumptive Republican nominee is notorious for commentary that's offended women, Latinos and Muslims so far this presidential cycle. Now add to the list Native Americans.
In an interview with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, Trump took a pot-shot at Warren over her heritage.

Dowd pressed Trump on whether House Speaker Paul Ryan had pressured him to ratchet down the rhetoric on women.
"When I asked if he had been chided by any Republicans for his Twitter feud with Elizabeth Warren, he replied, 'You mean Pocahontas?' So much for reining it in," she wrote in the column published this weekend.

It's not the first time Trump has taken a swipe at Warren's lineage. His seemingly stream-of-conscious Twitter feed previously branded her as "our Native American senator" and jabbed her "phony Native American heritage." In a separate interview last week, he responded to queries about Warren by asking, "Who? The indian?"

Trump is zeroing in on a 2012 source of contention in her then-campaign against Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown. As The Atlantic reported at the time, Warren is potentially 1/32 Cherokee, and has at times used that heritage to describe herself as holding a minority status. At other times, she has listed herself as white.
This apparent flip-flopping is the fuel behind Trump's latest line of attack.
As with many of the real estate mogul and reality TV star's personal jabs, the remark isn't entirely offhand. Rather, it's a targeted play for a specific audience. The "Warren fake Native American" narrative was touted on right-wing blogs back in 2012, and social media is full of "LOL"-like reactions from Trump supporters today.
But in continuing this line of attack, Trump could well alienate yet another demographic.
@thehill Typical Trump: uses "Pocahontas" as a pejorative, effectively demeaning ALL Native-Americans in the process. Did we expect any less

While Warren hasn't responded directly to that critique, we'll no doubt be seeing more of this in the coming days:
.@realDonaldTrump can’t talk about Wall St, college costs or min wage, so he spent all day belching insults. Pathetic. Really pathetic.

While some pundits praise Warren for taking a stand against Trump, others are wondering about her end-game. A hero to many on the left, the Massachusetts senator has yet to endorse a Democratic presidential candidate, and has dodged ongoing talk of a potential vice presidential nomination.
