Over 1,000 Boston Teachers, Staff Out Sick Tuesday
While schools prepare for staffing shortages, officials stand firm on keeping students in class this year.

BOSTON — More than 1,000 Boston Public Schools teachers, staff and bus drivers are out of school Tuesday.
Part of 1,075 school employees are missing for COVID-19 related reasons, but some are missing for other reasons, Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said, adding that 461 of those callouts were classroom teachers and 52 were school bus drivers.
Boston Public Schools returned to in-class learning after the holiday break, despite some Massachusetts schools canceling or delaying Monday's classes to make sure staff members tested negative for COVID-19.

The state has remained adamant about keeping students in class this year, saying remote school will not count toward the required 180 days of learning districts must provide.
Over the weekend, Cassellius said over 155 teachers had already called out for Monday before some teachers even got the results back from the at-home rapid testing kits the state gave out.
