Harvard Professor Released On $1M Cash Bond, Forfeits Passport
Charles Lieber would also have to remain in Massachusetts if a judge grants the prosecution's request.

BOSTON — A renowned Harvard professor charged with lying about receiving funding from China was released from federal custody and ordered to post a $1 million cash bond.
Charles Lieber, the chair of Harvard's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, was in court Thursday in an orange jumpsuit and shackles. He was arrested this week for what prosecutors said was lying about taking part in the China's Thousands Talents program, which targets brainpower from outside the country.
Prosecutors requested a $1.5 million bond tied to his Lexington home. The judge issued it at $1 million cash, due next Thursday.

Lieber also must relinquish his passport and remain in Massachusetts. His wife also gave up her passport.
Lieber moved to Harvard in 1991. The Philadelphia native is a leading mind in nanotechnology, according to his university bio.
