Red Sox Bringing Back Mitch Moreland

The Red Sox agreed Tuesday to bring back first baseman Mitch Moreland, the team sticking with a known quantity in what has been an offseason of uncertainty.

The one-year deal is worth $2.5 million for this season and has a $3 million team option for 2021 with a $500,000 buyout.

Moreland, 34, hit .252 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs in 91 games last year, battling back and quad injuries. The surehanded first baseman was an All-Star in 2018, delivering a key pinch-hit three-run home run in the World Series.

Moreland is also a positive presence in the clubhouse. The Red Sox might be in need of stability with Alex Cora out and roster questions as the team tries to slash payroll.
