Red Sox Pitching Legend Luis Tiant Dead At 83

BOSTON, MA — Boston Red Sox pitching legend Luis Tiant, known for his Major League career that spanned 19 seasons, has died, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday. He was 83.

Tiant, a Cuba native known as "El Tiante," made three All-Star teams and won 20 or more games four times, according to MLB.

"Tiant won two ERA titles in the American League - one in 1968 for Cleveland, and another in 1972 for Boston," the league continued. He also pitched for the Yankees, Twins, Pirates and Angels.

Born Nov. 23, 1940, in Marianao, Cuba, Tiant made his MLB debut in July 1964. He was selected to the All-Star teams of the Cleveland Indians in 1968 and the Boston Red Sox in both 1974 and 1976.

Tiant started three games for the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series, with two complete games and 25 innings pitched, MLB Communications said on X Tuesday.

In his official X profile, Tiant called himself a "Proud father, grandfather & husband to the best baseball wife Maria."

Many fans took to social media to celebrate Tiant's unique pitching style, which one user called "of the indelible baseball images" of their childhood.

"Every kid like me who started watching baseball in the 70's had an imitation of Luis Tiant's windup," the fan wrote.
