Rhode Island Grandma Detained At Boston Logan Taken To Maine Jail: Reports

BOSTON, MA — A Rhode Island grandmother detained by Immigration and Customs at Boston Logan International Airport has been transported to a county jail in Maine, according to media reports.

Eva Mendes, has missed the birth of her first grandchild during her detention, Newsweek reported.

"She was finally transferred to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, Maine, per ICE records," the Newsweek story said. "Her ongoing detention has worried her family and her attorney, who said he was unable to speak with his client before Saturday."

Mendes, a mother of six from Woonsocket, came to the United States from Cape Verde when she was 8 years old and last month returned to the Cape Verde after her brother died.

Mendes' family said she renewed her green card as recently as last month and her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, said she was detained over a 2009 shoplifting case, although he has not seen anything in writing, according to WJAR.

Pomerleau "said he plans on filing a new motion to have Mendes released immediately," WJAR reported.

Mendes had not seen her mother in 40 years before her trip to Cape Verde, according to Boston 25 News.

“I haven’t seen my mom since I was 8, so part of going was supposed to be a really good part of my life,” Mendes said in the Boston 25 News story. “It turned out to be the worst right about now."
