Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said the investigation is fluid, as multiple agencies are working to uncover how exactly the Friday morning chaos unfolded.
It started around 9:21 a.m., when police got called to the hospital campus and confronted a suspect. Long said the man had what appeared to be a firearm.

Officers fired at the suspect, who had assaulted one of the officers, Long said. Authorities are still not sure whether the suspect fired a weapon.
Around the same time, there was a report of the valet worker suffering from a gunshot wound. It's unclear who shot the worker.
The suspect led police to Route 9 in Brookline, where he crashed near a gas station close to a popular grocery store. The suspect got out and refused to drop the weapon, Long said. Officers fired upon the suspect, killing him.
State Police said one of the officers who fired in Brookline was a state trooper.
A witness who works at a nearby gas station told Patch he heard at least five gunshots.
"I heard the crash, I didn't see it," Howard Coober said. "When I saw the car do a 360 [spin], I called 911. But they were already on their way down."
Coober said he heard multiple voices yelling at someone behind a small brick building that contains restrooms next to the gas station.
"I saw all the police running over there behind the building and I heard them yelling to someone: 'Get down,' and I heard quite a few — I heard at least five shots," he said.
Numerous agencies, including the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, are investigating.
The incidents prompted a shelter-in-place at the hospital and two schools in Brookline and caused several road closures, including much of Route 9 for hours.
"There is no further threat to our campus," Brigham and Women's said.
