Ortiz was shot in June of 2019 in a Dominican bar. Prosecutors said the attempt on Ortiz's life was a paid hit, but then later said the gunman mistakenly thought Ortiz, one of the most famous people in the country, was someone else.

Ortiz was nearly killed in the shooting, undergoing multiple surgeries and spending more than a month in the hospital.
