Uber Will Let You Avoid Surge Costs -- For a Price

Available in Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, Allston and Brighton and on sale through Friday.

Boston, MA - Uber is expanding a new program in Boston that lets riders skip surge fees -- for a monthly price.

The Uber POOL Pass program is marking area trips down to a flat $2 in June, as the company offers a 20 trips/$40 pass on its POOL ride-splitting program.

One draw of the program is that it protects against "surge pricing," the spiking price of rides during high-demand times (think: pouring rain, Red Sox game). A drawback (if that's not your thing) is that you'll be riding with potential strangers through UberPOOL, which does take longer than the traditional, taxi-esque "UberX."

Factoring in the pass cost and assuming you use all 20 trips, the deal works out to $4.00 per trip, Uber said.

The pass applies in Cambridge, Somerville, Charlestown, Allston and Brighton. It will be on sale until 7 p.m. Friday through the Uber app.
