UMass Boston Says 'All Clear' After Cops Search Campus For Active Shooter

The report of an active shooter has yet to be confirmed, police said.

BOSTON, MA — The University of Boston announced it was "all clear" after police searched the campus for an active shooter Thursday afternoon.

"Police have reported the incident on campus all clear," UMass Boston posted to X, the social media account formerly known as Twitter. "There is no ongoing threat to the community."

Officers from South Boston and Dorchester responded to a call of shots fired shortly before 3:45 p.m. Thursday, said Officer Mark Marron of the Boston Police Department Office of Media Relations.

"Multiple units responded and are actively investigating the building and surrounding area," Marron said shortly after 4:30 p.m. "At this time, there has been no confirmation of shots fired and no confirmation of any individuals with firearms on campus."

Boston police Sgt. Detective John Boyle said the department received no additional reports of an active shooter.

UMass Boston issued a public safety threat Thursday afternoon and warned the public to stay away.

"UMass Boston Alert: Public Safety threat in/near Residence Hall East Building. Avoid area. More information to come," the university posted on its website.

The university canceled all classes and activities shortly before 5 p.m.

"Classes and activities are canceled for the evening," the university posted to X. "Police investigation ongoing. More information to follow."

This is the second time in eight days the threat of a gunman prompted a police response at a University of Massachusetts campus.

On Sept. 3, police were called to UMass Lowell after a man was spotted carrying what was believed to be a firearm.

A shelter-in-place order was issued and all classes and events were canceled while police searched for the suspected gunman.

After a massive effort involving a Lowell Police Department drone, the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, numerous police dogs, state troopers, a SWAT team, UMass Lowell police, Lowell Nation Historic Parl Law Enforcement Rangers, agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, investigators determined the suspected gunman was actually a juvenile carrying an airsoft replica rifle.
