BOSTON — The pandemic isn't over, and the Boston Marathon will reflect that in more ways than one. Not only is there a trimmed-down field for the 2021 version of the race, but there's going to be a significant amount of masks along the race route.

Runners are not required to wear a mask while racing, but they will need to wear them on buses to and from the race. Masks will also be required and provided in all medical tents along the 26.2-mile route.

Masks will be available for runners at the Boylston Street finish line.

Runners — and everyone else — will need to wear masks indoors as part of Boston's indoor mask mandate. That includes the Boston Marathon Expo at the Hynes Convention Center in the three days leading up to the race.

Volunteers who will have direct interaction or close proximity with the runners must wear masks. Some will be provided additional personal protective equipment.

The Boston Athletic Association said spectators should do their part in limiting the spread of COVID-19, including being fully vaccinated, getting a negative test and wearing a mask.

Officials are also telling runners to avoid taking food and water from spectators and to refrain "from kissing a stranger around the halfway mark of the Boston Marathon," a reference to the Wellesley College students who have traditionally encouraged runners with a smooch.

All mask guidance and requirements are subject to change.

"Mask policies will be reviewed on a regular basis and updated in accordance with local guidance leading up to the October 11th race," the Boston Athletic Association said.
