What's Open, Closed For July 4, 2022 In Massachusetts

Here are the closures to know for Independence Day and events around Boston and the Bay State.

BOSTON — As Massachusetts residents get ready to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, barbecues, and travel, various closures and schedule changes are planned for services around Boston.

The Independence Day holiday falls on Monday, July 4, which means some services will be closed for a three-day weekend. The Commonwealth's government offices will be closed on July 4, and other services will have schedule changes.

The Boston Pops July 4th Fireworks Spectacular will be held Monday, July 4 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Hatch Memorial Shell, 47 David G. Mugar Way, Boston.

  • Retail stores: Open at the owner's discretion.
  • Liquor stores: Open.
  • Supermarkets: Open.
  • Convenience stores: Open.
  • Bars: Open.
  • Banks: Closed.
  • Libraries: Closed.
  • Pharmacies: Mixed bag, call first.
  • Stock market: Closed.
  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed.
  • Mail: Post offices closed; express delivery only.
  • MBTA: On Friday, subways and ferries will run normally. On Saturday, subways, buses, and commuter rail will run on a Saturday schedule. Sunday will follow suit, running on a Sunday schedule for everything. On Monday the subway will run on a modified Saturday schedule until 1 p.m. After 1 p.m., the subway will run on a weekday schedule. Bus, Silver Line, and the RIDE will run on a Sunday schedule on Monday.
    The following trains will hold for 30 minutes after the fireworks:
    • Fitchburg Line
    • Framingham/Worcester Line
    • Franklin Line
    • Greenbush Line
    • Haverhill Line
    • Lowell Line
    • Middleborough/Lakeville Line
    • Providence/Stoughton Line
    All other lines will depart as scheduled.
