Salon Monet has been applauded frequently during its 22 years as the only hair salon on Boston’s legendary Newbury Street owned and operated by an African-American woman. Last year a boston.com survey of readers hailed it as one of 15 top Newbury Street businesses. https://www.boston.com/community/readers-say/best-newbury-street-stores/
Mendes founded Salon Monet in 2003 after years struggling with homelessness and poverty as a young mother of two whose full-time job in financial services could not pay rent and living costs in Boston. She began working after-hours at Newbury Street hair salons. The rest is history!
“Without the mentors who helped me get a start in the business world, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Mendes. “I want to pay it forward and give young women the kind of support I received.”
In addition to the six-month mentorship with Shellee and Courtney, many professional women will attend the brunch, eager to give back through mentorship to younger women striving to succeed in work and life. Among them are: Priscilla Douglas, Executive Coach; Terri Weekes, M.D., Best of Boston 2025; Sandra Louis-Charles, CEO, Vanguard Style Suite; and Sharnam Mashmasarmi, Attorney & Entrepreneur.
