BROOKLINE, MA — Town leadership is currently weighing the option of using data gathered by an artificial intelligence initiative in the interest of public safety, according to a report from Boston 25 News.

Chestnut Hill Realty recently announced it is installing AI-powered license plate reading cameras on Independence Drive for the purpose of deterring crime. The Brookline Select Board is considering voting to allow the police department access to collected data. The Brookline Police Commissioners Advisory Committee voted 5-0 in favor of the town tapping into the data from Flock Safety. It is reportedly now developing a data-use policy before the Select Board votes.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the only two New England states without laws regulating the use of license plate recognition systems.
