Online Fundraiser For Fallen MIT Professor Getting Large-scale Support
The GoFundMe has received hundreds of donations in a short period of time.
BROOKLINE, MA — An online fundraiser has already raised more than $100,000 for the family of MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro, who was shot and killed earlier this week at his home.
The GoFundMe was launched by Ivania Konieczka, a friend of Loureiro, his wife, Ines, and their three daughters. She said the fundraiser is primarily meant to support the three young girls’ educational future and ease their financial burden in the aftermath of their loved one’s death.
“Nuno Loureiro was not only a brilliant scientist and a dear friend, but also a deeply devoted husband and father who cared profoundly about his daughters’ futures, their education, and the opportunities he worked tirelessly to provide for them,” Konieczka wrote.

The fundraiser has received more than 700 donations as of Friday afternoon and is close to reaching its goal of $140,000.
“Nuno (Loureiro) and his wife built a family life rooted in love and stability, one filled with laughter and joy, learning and growth,” Koniezcka wrote. “But it was tragically cut short by a senseless act of violence that has robbed his family of the precious time and resources needed to continue guiding, supporting, and providing for their daughters.”

Loureiro was found suffering from gunshot wounds Monday after police responded to his apartment at 9 Gibbs St. at approximately 8:30 p.m. Authorities say he was gunned down by Claudio Neves Valente, 48, who was also responsible for the Brown University shooting on Saturday, Dec. 10 that killed two students and critically injured nine others. The Portuguese national was found by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a storage facility in Salem, NH on Thursday night.
Loureiro was a decorated professor of nuclear science and engineering. In 2024, he became the director of Plasma Science and Fusion Center Director, one of the university’s largest and most prominent labs.
