Brookline To Hold Bi-Annual Trash Amnesty Collection Week

Residents can dispose of extra household waste and up to 4 bulky items alongside their trash cart without being charged a fee.

BROOKLINE, MA —The Brookline Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced details of its upcoming Trash Amnesty collection, which is scheduled for early next month.

During the week of Sept. 4-9, residents who utilize the town's trash collection will be allowed to dispose of extra household waste and up to four bulky items alongside their trash cart without being charged a fee for overflow trash bags or bulky item collection.

The collection is part of Brookline's Hybrid Pay-As-You-Throw Trash (HPAYT) Program.

"This bi-annual observance ensures all Brookline residents have access to responsible waste disposal services for their excess waste," Brookline officials said in a statement.

Brookline officials noted that due to Labor Day on Sept. 4, trash collection be delayed by one day during Trash Amnesty Week. Items also should not be placed out for pick up before 3:30 p.m. the day before the resident's scheduled trash day, officials said.

According to the DPW, bulky items such as sofas, mattresses, TVs and appliances must be called in for scheduled pickup. The phone number is 617-730-2156, and the collection of these items must be scheduled a week in advance. Residents who schedule bulky item collection online will be charged the standard collection fee or fees, according to officials.

Brookline officials also said that construction and demolition waste will not be accepted during Trash Amnesty Week.

Household hazardous waste items, like flammable materials, should be brought to the Brookline Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility, located at 815 Newton Street, officials said. These items should be dropped off between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Brookline officials also reminded residents that yard waste pickups will take place on residents' normal collection day.
