BROOKLINE, MA — The plan was to have a superintendent selected by the end of April. But the superintendent search that launched at the beginning of the year failed, according to school committee members.

And now, as Interim Superintendent Ben Lummis is set leave at the end of this school year, the district is also looking for a temporary superintendent.

On Tuesday the School Committee met online to discuss next steps.

Lummis, who was the administrator for the schools, slid into the superintendent role at the beginning of this school year when former Superintendent Andrew Bott stepped down abruptly after three years at the helm. Lummis was set to be in position temporarily until a permanent superintendent is found. Last year the Brookline School Committee decided to specifically not allow anyone who took the interim position to roll into the permanent position, which they were also looking. Committee members discussed on Tuesday the possibility of dropping that limitation this round. Those in favor of limiting the interim position to one year said it could help eliminate political pressure. Those for dropping the limit could help attract a wider pool to the interim role.
