Former Foster Youth Raises Funds for Boston CASA Holiday Drive

Brookline High School Junior Launches Campaign to Support Children in Care

Skyla Luzzi-Porco, a 17-year-old Brookline High School junior who spent time in foster care as a young child, is raising money to provide holiday gifts for children currently in the foster care system through Boston CASA's annual holiday drive.

Luzzi-Porco, who was in foster care from ages 4 to 6 before being adopted by her "forever family" at age 7, launched the fundraising campaign to give back to the system that once supported her. Her campaign has a goal of raising $3,000, which will be used by Boston CASA to purchase holiday gifts for children and youth. The gifts aim to ensure foster youth experience the joy of the holiday season and feel remembered during what can be a difficult time of year.

"Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday, which I celebrate all year long," said Luzzi-Porco. "I'm so grateful to everyone who took care of me, from my foster mom Karen to social workers, DCF, family and friends. Now I want to give back and help kids currently in foster care feel loved and create joyful memories this holiday season."

Massachusetts' 8,200 foster youth face significant challenges that extend well beyond the holiday season. Many lack the stability and support that traditional families provide, making initiatives like this holiday drive particularly meaningful for children who may feel forgotten during the holidays.

"Skyla's campaign represents the very best of what we hope to inspire in young people who have experienced foster care," said Nicole Stewart, executive director of Boston CASA. "Her desire to give back and ensure other children feel loved during the holiday season shows the remarkable difference one person's kindness can make."

During her time in foster care, Luzzi-Porco lived with her foster mother, Karen, who provided the care and stability she needed during a critical time in her development. Her foster care experience brought "light" to her childhood and has given her unique insight into what foster youth need most: to feel loved and supported.

Luzzi-Porco has been promoting the campaign through social media and by creating a presentation about Boston CASA and her background to share at her church. She has also reached out to friends, family and neighbors to spread the word.

Boston CASA trains volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates for children who have experienced abuse and neglect, many of whom are in foster care. The organization currently serves more than 300 children annually through over 250 trained advocates in Suffolk and Middlesex counties.

The fundraising campaign runs through Tuesday, Dec. 30, with all proceeds going directly to Boston CASA. Community members can donate at https://secure.givelively.org/donate/boston-casa/skyla-luzzi-porco.

About Boston CASA
Boston CASA recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) in Suffolk and Middlesex Counties for children removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect, most of whom end up in foster care. Unlike mentors, CASAs work within the child welfare system, advocating directly in court and alongside DCF to ensure children in foster care receive the support, stability, and services they need. Research shows that just one consistent adult can change a child’s trajectory—help us be that difference. Volunteer, donate, or support our mission at www.bostoncasa.org . #ChangeAChildsStory
