Japanese Street Food Comes To Coolidge Corner

A new spot just opened in the arcade.

BROOKLINE, MA — There's a new Japanese food option in town. The folks behind the ramen restaurant in the Brookline arcade opened across the hall from Ganko Ittetsu Ramen. The new place, Gantetsu-Ya focuses on Japanese-inspired snacks- like grilled balls with octopus, and savory pancakes.

"Gantetsu-Ya offers authentic Japanese takoyaki and okonomiyaki - well known street food in Japan," according to the restaurant's Facebook page.

Takoyaki is described as fried balls of batter, similar to a hushpuppy, filled with little pieces of octopus, tempura, green onions and pickled ginger.

The name for Okonomiyaki comes from the word okonomi, which means "how you like" and yaki means "cooked."

This comes about four years after Ganko Ittetsu Ramen opened in 2015.
