MIT Working To Support Community In Aftermath Of Professor's Murder
The school is trying to recover from the loss as the investigation remains ongoing.

BROOKLINE, MA — The search for a suspect in the Monday night murder of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro continues Thursday in both Brookline and Cambridge. Meanwhile, MIT is trying to support its students and staff as they mourn the loss of a mentor and peer respectively.
The manhunt is a combined effort by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office, Brookline Police Officers, and MIT Police.
“Our deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving. Focused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro,” Deputy Director of MIT Media Relations Sarah McDonnell said. “As ever, we are encouraging any members of the MIT community who may be affected by this death to reach out for support.”

The University emphasized that those in their community struggling with grief, stress, anxiety, or depression from the death of Loureiro should use its counseling resources, which are being reinforced and bolstered during this difficult time.
MyLife Services provides up to four free counseling sessions for school employees, while students can get consultations with the Student Mental Health branch.

MIT News published a school obituary for the fallen Plasma Science and Fusion Director, which led to more voices discussing Loureiro’s legacy.
“Nuno was a champion for plasma physics within the Physics Department, a wonderful and engaging colleague, and an inspiring and caring mentor for graduate students working in plasma science.” William A. M. Burden Professor in Astrophysics and head of the Department of Physics Deepto Chakrabarty said. “His recent work on quantum computing algorithms for plasma physics simulations was a particularly exciting new scientific direction.”
Police have increased their presence on the university's campus for investigation and safety purposes. The increased security is also a response to the Brown University shooting in which the shooter remains at large, as well as an antisemitic vandalism incident that occurred last week.
