Police Chase Ends With Crash, Shooting On Rt. 9 In Brookline
Route 9 westbound reopened around 5 p.m. according to officials, as police investigate.
BROOKLINE, MA — Law enforcement officers swarmed the area along Route 9 and Hammond Street in Chestnut Hill as a police chase that started at Brigham and Women's in Boston ended Friday morning with officers shooting a man.
Although Route 9 was reopened both directions at 5 p.m, the investigation doesn't look set to end any time soon, officials said.
No Brookline officers or drivers were injured in the chase, or the subsequent gunfire, according to officials. The Norfolk District Attorney confirmed that police shot Juston Root, 41, of Mattapan, died.

It started in Boston outside Brigham and Women's Hospital, according to authorities, making this a multi-jurisdictional crime, involving Boston, Brookline and State Police. Just before 9:30 a.m. someone called 911 to report a man with a gun outside of the hospital. Boston Police showed up and found a man with a gun. What exactly happened next is still not completely clear: Officials said shots were exchanged, and a valet at the hospital was hit. That valet was treated in the hospital ER, but is now in critical condition, according to officials.
It's unclear who shot the 49-year-old valet. Authorities said during a press conference that an officer was assaulted during the exchange near the hospital.

Root then took off in a car and took police on a chase along Route 9 into Chestnut Hill. Root hit several cars and near the corner of Hammond Street and Route 9, spun to a stop, lost a wheel and got out of his silver Chevy Volt.
At this point, police said, he pointed his gun at police, who had caught up with him. Police shot him after he refused to put down his gun, authorities said. Root was then transported to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Boston brought in a police dog and detectives marked off the bulk of the Start Market parking lot for hours.
If you can, avoid the area, police say there will be delays into the evening.
