Brighton Man Arrested for Cambridge Bank Robbery

A Brighton man was arrested on Tuesday after trying to rob a bank in Harvard Square.

CAMBRIDGE, MA - A Brighton man was arrested on Tuesday after trying to rob a Brattle Street bank in Cambridge.

According to Cambridge Police Dept. spokesperson Jeremy Warnick, the suspect, Robert Staley, 53, Brighton allegedly handed a note to a teller at a bank located on Brattle Street sometime after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to bank employees who reported the robbery at 9:26 a.m, the teller handed the suspect money and he fled out of the bank and turned right.

"Moments later, officers responded to the Central Square T station outbound platform as a train had just arrived from Harvard Square. Emergency Communications Department dispatchers instructed the MBTA to stop the train," Warnick said in an email.

Cambridge officers walked through the train cars and observed a suspect matching the description of the bank robbery suspect. Upon further inspection, officers discovered a large bulge in the front right pocket of the suspect’s jacket and slightly exposed stacks of bills and loose notes.

Staley was placed into handcuffs and positively identified by bank personnel.

Warnick said he will be charged with unarmed robbery.
