Buses to Replace Red Line Between Park and Kendall/MIT Starting Sept. 30

Buses will replace the regular MBTA Red Line service starting Sept. 30.

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Part of the Red Line will be switching to bus service for two and a half months to accommodate the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

Today, the MBTA announced the switch, which will start this weekend and run through December.

"MBTA customers are reminded that shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains in both directions between Park Street and Kendall/MIT Stations with a stop at Charles/MGH Station on weekends beginning this Saturday, September 30, and continuing on most weekends through Sunday, December 17."

The shuttle bus route and stops are shown on this map. Exact shuttle bus stop locations are below:

- Kendall/MIT: Shuttle buses will pick up and drop off at the Marriott Hotel.
- Charles/MGH: Inbound shuttle buses will pick up and drop off at Cambridge Street @ Grove Street. Outbound shuttle buses will pick up and drop off at Cambridge Street @ Charles Street near the Liberty Hotel.
- Park Street: Shuttle buses will pick up and drop off at Tremont Street @ Temple Place.

During the weekends in which buses will shuttle customers, elements below the Red Line’s right of way will be replaced, which requires the removal and replacement of all Red Line track systems near Charles/MGH Station. The replacement of the track may also require some speed restrictions in this area of the Red Line for the days immediately following each weekend.

On each weekend, bus shuttle replacement service will begin at the start of service on Saturday and will end at the beginning of service on Monday. All shuttle bus stops are accessible for persons with disabilities.

Red Line passengers should note that regular weekend Red Line train service is anticipated to operate during the Head of the Charles weekend, which takes place on October 21 and 22, and during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Similar Red Line shuttle bus replacement has occurred on about a dozen occasions previously in the Longfellow Bridge area due to project work, and the MBTA has appreciated the patience and understanding of customers as bridge infrastructure is improved and replaced.
