Cambridge Crews Clean Up After, During High Winds and Rain

Public Works crews, Fire and Police in Cambridge responded to calls for downed wires and trees after high winds hit the area.

CAMBRIDGE, MA - Almost 200 Cambridge Eversource customers are still without power this afternoon as high winds and rain have continued throughout the area. A weather advisory was issued early this morning in Middlesex County.

As of 10 a.m., there were 140 Everource customers in Cambridge without power. By 3 p.m., that number had grown to approximately 190. Boston currently has 683 customers without power while Somerville, Newton and Watertown each have 67, 376 and 255 customers, respectively, who are also affected by the outage.

According to Cambridge Dept. of Public Works community relations manager Dan Rivello, sewer crews started working last night to deal with issues arising from the high winds and rain.

"We had our sewer crews come in around 11 p.m. last night and they worked through the night to clear catch basins, etc. to help prevent flooding," he said.

Rivello said Cambridge forestry crews also came in just after midnight to start cleanup of branches and limbs and cleanup continues.

He said there were no significant sewer or forestry-related issues reported.

Cambridge Police Dept. spokesperson Jeremy Warnick said officers have been responding to reports of numerous fallen trees, flooded areas and downed wires throughout the morning and afternoon.

"We saw about 30 calls for service between 11 p.m. last night and 10 a.m. this morning due to the storm-related incidents," he said.

The Cambridge Fire Department also reported a busy night. Cambridge fire crews responded to 17 fire alarms, five box alarms and five reports of downed wires/trees.
