Cambridge Fire Relief Fund Surpasses Goal
The public met this weekend's 10-alarm fire with an overwhelming show of support.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — A 10-alarm fire has been met with an outpouring of public support, an online relief fund surpassing its $500,000 goal only days after flames tore through a Cambridge neighborhood this weekend.
The fire began Saturday afternoon at an under-construction building, and rapidly spread through the area of Berkshire and York Streets.
In total, the city said Tuesday, 122 were displaced from their homes, including between 25 and 30 children, according to fire officials. At least one of the 18 impacted buildings was a low-income housing complex, which was home to an estimated 60 people, a city councilor told Patch.

With 24 hours, nearly 4,000 people had donated more than $250,000—over half the relief fund's goal.
As of Tuesday evening, that total has surpassed the fund's $500,000 goal, with over 7,000 donors and over $510,000 donated.
Monetary donations remain the most urgent need. As for material donations, such as food and clothing, Simmons has said the city will announce if and when those are needed. She asks the public to please hold off for now.
