Catherine Achorn of Cambridge is one of 40 women who will be hiking the White Mountains of New Hampshire this weekend as part of the 29th annual Wilderness Heals. This pledge hike raises money for the Stone House in Roxbury, which has been making a difference in the community by caring for and protecting adult and child survivors of domestic abuse, and helping them rebuild safe, secure, independent lives of purpose and self-fulfillment for 50 years.

As Stone House’s largest fundraiser, Wilderness Heals raises unrestricted, crucial, flexible funding that helps meet the needs of the domestic violence survivors who rely on Stone House. This year, all funds raised will support the programs and operations of its emergency shelter.

This is Catherine’s first time participating in the event. "People I know have been doing Wilderness Heals for the last decade or so, and I've been donating to them for a while," said Catherine Achorn. "I think the Stone House is such a worthwhile cause. This year, they added the option of a one day hike for the first time. Now, I do enjoy hiking, but I'm not someone who gets up to the White Mountains every weekend, she said" "Completing the NH 48 is not something that is on my bucket list," she added with a laugh. "However, I like getting out and enjoying the mountains on occasion. The one day hike felt more like something I could accomplish, since I will admit that the three day hike seemed a little daunting for me. I've never done an overnight hike before. So I signed up and figured this would be my chance to test the waters as it were, and it's been fun so far."

"By hiking I can get a little more in donations for the Stone House other than what I would have donated myself," she added.
