Harvard University Student Assaulted While Running In Cambridge
Cambridge and State Police are searching for a man who assaulted a Harvard University student while she was running on Tuesday.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — Harvard University Police are warning students and the public to be careful after a student was assaulted on Tuesday just before noon.
According to a statement issued by Harvard University on Tuesday, a Harvard undergrad was running along the Charles River near the intersection of Western Ave. and Memorial Drive when she was grabbed from behind by a man.
She told police she immediately began to fight back and used pepper spray on him and escape but she didn't get a good look at him enough to provide a description to police, who are now on the look out.

Police said the woman was able to break away from the offender and ran to one of the River Houses along the Charles. Because the assault happened on state property, Massachusetts State Police are investigating.

In response to the attack, Harvard University Police told students and staff to be present and aware when walking around the area, in a press release.
"Community members should be vigilant while walking throughout campus and surrounding areas both during the day and at night and to take the appropriate precautions, such as walking with others and utilizing walking escorts, taxi escort, the shuttle bus and evening van service whenever possible," it read.
Police also issued a safety checklist for students and staff in Cambridge:
- Persons should avoid talking on cell phones, listening to music, or walking too close to persons unnecessarily.
- If you suspect you are being followed, stay away from dimly lit areas and head for a store or building that you know to be open.
- Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable about someone near you, head for a populated area and call the Harvard University Police Department.
- If you are approached by someone displaying a weapon and demanding your property, it is recommended that you comply with the request and not resist.
Students, faculty, and staff should call the Harvard University Police Department at 617-495-1212 if they believe they are in danger while waiting for transportation due to the hour or circumstance, said police.
