New Gelato Shop In Harvard Square

CAMBRIDGE, MA — Amorino, a France-based artisan gelato shop chain that opened its first New England location a couple of years ago on Newbury Street just opened its second shop near Harvard Square, Eater Boston reports. And Friday you might just be able to score a free gelato from them.

The sweet spot that makes gelato "churned in the Italian fashion" is operated by Lea Sasportes, here and opened shop at 50 JFK St. in Cambridge Wednesday, June 13, where it serves co-eds and the rest of us organic made gelato flavors, charmingly shaped into a flower.

Because the shop is in JFK Street's historic district there was some red tape that took about two years to coordinate with the city for renovations and zoning changes, Sasportes told Eater.

Where exactly is this place? Amorino took over the old Berk’s Shoes space, which was there for decades, but before that, before many of us were born it was home to a drugstore that - drum roll please - sold ice cream. Full circle, right?

Amorino serves all kinds of gelato flavors, ranging from chocolate to dulce de leche to mango, coconut, and black currant. The shop also makes fancy drinks including sorbet drinks, and granita. But they also serve waffles and crepes and of course, macaroons.

Don't worry if you missed Wednesday's opening Friday, June 15, look for gelato “happy hour” - literally for an hour between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. — show up and a free cone or cup of gelato if you happen to be at the front of the line.

Hours:

• 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday,
• 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday,
• 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
• Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday.
