Reminder: City Offices Closed Monday

Cambridge is marking its first observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day Monday.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — A quick reminder that city offices will be closed and some city services delayed Monday, as Cambridge observes Indigenous Peoples' Day for the first time.

According to the city, trash and recycling pickup will be one day behind schedule for the rest of the week. Street cleaning routes regularly scheduled for Monday were completed last Thursday.

This is the first year that Cambridge marks Indigenous Peoples' Day, replacing Columbus Day.

Cambridge City Council voted in June, "to state that the second Monday of October henceforth be commemorated as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Cambridge, in recognition of the indigenous people of America’s position as native to these lands, and the suffering they faced following European conquest of their land."

Councilor Nadeem Mazen sponsored the policy order, which you can read in full here. He said at the time that renaming the holiday is important to reclaim October 11 as a day for Native Americans.
