Revamp Coming to Curious George Store Building

Owners of the "World's Only Curious George Store" say they hope to remain in Harvard Square.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — The colorful World's Only Curious George Store is one of the first sites to greet visitors to Harvard Square as they emerge from the Harvard MBTA station, complete with the curious monkey himself aboard a bicycle and an awning bright enough to please the Man in the Yellow Hat.

But the bookstore's days at that prominent location may be numbered.

According to a developer's proposal to Cambridge City Council, the building that currently houses the Curious George store, Urban Outfitters, and others would become the "Harvard Collection" commercial development.

That proposal submitted to the city includes the introduction of a lobby, staircase and elevator where the Curious George store currently resides. The plan goes before councilors this Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the Curious store thanked the community for its love and support following the news, writing:

"We love being here in Harvard Square, and hope to stay here serving the Community as long as possible."

Cambridge became home to the authors of the beloved illustrated children's book series in the years after World War II, when they fled Paris. It was originally opened at the behest of Curious George writer Margret Rey with publisher Houghton Mifflin, according a history published on the store's site. It now sells children's books and toys from that series and many more.
