What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day In Cambridge

Find out what's opening and what's keeping its doors closed on the 2019 holiday.

CAMBRIDGE, MA — Happy New Year! As you get your resolutions in order and step into the new year, it might be helpful to know what's open and closed. City offices will be closed on Jan. 1 for New Year's Day, and they will be closing early on Monday, Dec. 31.

City offices, including all library locations and senior centers, will be closing at 5 p.m. City offices will be open late on Thursday, Jan. 3 from 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Library locations and senior centers will be open for their regular hours on Jan. 3, 2019.

There will be a one-day delay for trash pickup this week: (Tuesday on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday, Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday).

  • Libraries: Closed
  • Post Office: Closed
  • Restaurants: Open at owner's discretion
  • Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion
  • Supermarkets: Open at owner's discretion
  • Liquor stores: Open
  • Banks: Closed
  • Gas stations: Open
  • Movie theaters: Open
  • Parking: Free Tuesday
  • Street Cleaning: Dec. 31, 2018 will be the last day of street cleaning for the winter season until services resume in April 2019.

Holiday Tree Collection

  • Curbside collection of un-decorated Christmas trees (weather permitting), will begin the week of Dec.31. Trees will be collected on your regular curbside collection day. Residents can also bring bare trees to the Recycling Center during open hours.

The MBTA will be running an altered schedule on New Year's Eve and on a Sunday schedule on New Year's Day.
