Orchard Cove Residents Provide Handmade Warmth for Project Linus

Volunteer "blanketeers" have been knitting for 11 years to help seriously ill or traumatized children

The heartwarming spirit of giving and community radiated through the Orchard Cove ballroom in Canton recently as residents came together to contribute handmade items like blankets, sweaters, and teddy bears for Project Linus. The event showcased the residents' dedication to spreading comfort and warmth to those in need, particularly children facing challenging circumstances.

Named after the beloved Peanuts character, Project Linus is a national nonprofit organization, with a Boston affiliate, whose mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” Since 1995, Project Linus has distributed 9.5 million blankets.

One standout contributor to the Orchard Cove Project Linus initiative is resident Edith Bard, who has been dedicated to knitting for the cause for an impressive 11 years. Bard, along with other Orchard Cove residents, has spent countless hours crafting a variety of items, including teddy bears, sweaters, and hats, all destined for children in need.

Bard emphasized the year-round commitment of the Orchard Cove community to the Project Linus cause. "All year long, we knit and crochet. We made all these teddy bears and hats, which we will send to Project Linus," she said. “They pick them up and bring them to shelters and orphanages, wherever there are children in need. Lately, they’ve been sending some to Ukraine.”

Community Gatherings: Knitting Together for a Cause

The sense of community is palpable during the bi-weekly gatherings of the Orchard Cove Project Linus blanketers. A dozen residents knit or crocheted during these in-person sessions, while others contribute their knitted creations from the comfort of their apartments. Bard expressed gratitude for the fantastic group of people who support this worthy cause.
