3 Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 5

City schools prepare to mark Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 5. Here are three things you need to know today.

1. Soldier Up, for a Cookie War
This Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m., two groups of first year Brownie Girl Scouts (that's second and third-graders) will "" with their respective cookie booths. One group will be stationed outside the Cooperative Bank; the other will be in front of Johnnie's Foodmaster. Both will be selling cookies, but they'll be competing to see who can sell the most "Cookies for a Cause." What's the cause? Sweetheart Care Packages that will be sent to local men and women who serve in the military. Stop by at either spot on Saturday and help them out.

2. In honor of MLK
Next week Boston Public Schools will be honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a  variety of events. There will be speaker series at participating schools — and to this end, school officials are looking for performers, artists and presenters. There will also be a celebratory show for all Boston Public School students at 10 a.m. on Jan. 13 at John Hancock Hall. Later, at 6 p.m. on the same day, there will be an encore show for the community and parents. For more details or to get involved, check out: http://bostonpublicschools.org/mlk.htm.
