5 Million Gmail Passwords Leaked Online; Make Sure Yours Isn't Among Them

Although the leak is significant by the volume of passwords released, many of the usernames and passwords are no longer valid.

A Russian website has published over 5 million Gmail usernames and passwords that were obtained through years of hacking and phishing, The Daily Dot reports.

On Tuesday evening, a user of the Russian Bitcoin forum btcsec posted a database containing the usernames and passwords of millions of Gmail and Google Plus accounts, in addition to login credentials for Yandex, which is Russia’s version of Google.

Google officials spoke with Russian media and claimed that many of the leaked credentials are outdated and invalid, The Daily Dot reports. Both Google and Yandex said that the leaked credentials were obtained through hacking and phishing of individual users’ accounts and that their databases were not breached.

Regardless of whether your account was listed or not, it’s a good idea to change your Gmail passwords now and enable two-factor authentication to prevent cyber criminals from getting your login information.
