5 Things: First Meeting of the Library Youth Committee
Deadlines, events and other items you should know about on April 11 in Charlestown.

1. Rain: Expect showers today, mainly before 11 a.m., with a chance of showers this evening, according to the National Weather Service. High; 49, Low: 37.
2. Library Youth Committee meeting: The new Youth Committee of the Charlestown Branch Library (170 Main St.) will hold their first meeting today at 4 p.m. at the library. Help make shakers for the little kids to use in story time, find out about new books, have a snack and help the children's librarian choose performers and programs. Youth Committee members should be at least 8 years old.
3. Educator award: Today is the deadline to submit nominations for the annual Boston Educators of the Year awards, which recognize outstanding teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, school nurses and other educators who have made a unique contribution to their students, their classrooms and their schools. Forms can be found here. Submit nominations to bostoneducator@cityofboston.gov.

4. Author talks: Journalist Dick Lehr will discuss his new book, “Whitey: The Life of America's Most Notorious Mob Boss,” today at 7 p.m. at The Book Shop (694 Broadway, Somerville). Copies of Lehr’s book will be available for purchase. Also today: Author Jane Green will speak about her most recent book, "Family Pictures," today at 6 p.m. in Rabb Lecture Hall at the Central Library in Copley Square (700 Boylston St.). This event is part of a series of talks scheduled at Boston Public Libraries this month.
5. Volunteer expo: With National Volunteer Week coming up April 21-27, The Shops at Prudential Center will host the 2013 Volunteer Expo today at 5:30 p.m. in the Huntington Arcade. Mix, mingle and meet with more than 50 community groups from the Boston and Greater Boston areas.
