A Film Festival in Charlestown?

Organizers of the Boston FAME Fest want to bring an independent film festival to the neighborhood this June.

If a couple of independent film producers, directors and executives have their way, Hollywood – well, Hollywood lite – will be coming to the neighborhood this June for Bunker Hill Day.

At this month’s Charlestown Neighborhood Council meeting, Robert Scali, an independent film director and Charlestown native, pitched the idea of a Bunker Hill Film Festival that would “bring the arts to Charlestown. … and make a connection between businesses and the arts.”

An organization called Boston FAME Fest is putting on the independent film festival, which will run June 16-19. According to the Boston FAME Fest web site, the four-day festival will commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill with screenings and exhibits in venues along the Freedom Trail.

At the Neighborhood Council meeting, Scali said he was interested in securing locations in Charlestown, specifically – small businesses, he said, like Zume’s Coffeehouse, and historical sites, like the monument itself.

A welcome message on the FAME Fest web site reads: “What better way to showcase Independent filmmakers, artists,  musicians, and entertainers than during the event that celebrates the beginning of the American Revolution!”

Neighborhood Council members were warm to the idea, particularly its emphasis on supporting local businesses. There were some concerns raised about the possible impact on traffic, but Scali told the council the scale of this event was small enough that it wouldn’t be a problem.

The FAME Fest web site also indicates that filmmakers can start submitting their work for the festival. Scali told the council local artists would have a chance to be highlighted in the festival.
