Charlestown Restaurant Pier 6 to Celebrate 1-Year Anniversary

A "beer garden" celebration will feature an exclusive new brew from Harpoon.

The Charlestown-based restaurant Pier 6 is set to hold a days-long celebration of its one-year anniversary this month, the business announced Tuesday.

The celebration will run from Friday, Sept. 12 through Tuesday, Sept. 30, and will include the designing of a garden installation on the eatery’s outdoor deck to create “a lush atmosphere of greenery,” according to Tuesday’s announcement.

“Our goal was to transform our outdoor deck into a true green space emulating a backyard garden and hopefully extending the sense of summer as long as possible,” said Managing Partner Sal Boscarino in a statement. “We’re essentially taking the beer garden concept figuratively and literally.”

Boston-based Harpoon Brewery will also provide an exclusive brew that will only be available to the restaurant, dubbed the “Pan-International Gaylord” beer, for which Harpoon offered the following description:

“Note from the Harpoon brewery: You can call it summer, you can call it a kitchen sink beer, you can call it caramel colored malt bomb if you want, but you should also call it delicious. Nineteen malts, three hops: We cleaned out our grain storage box, ‘The Gaylord,’ hence the name. Golden amber color from the caramel malts, which ranged from 10 to 150 on the Lovibond scale. To let the malt shine through, we left the hopping light, but used a blend of traditional American hops with some of our more esoteric hops: Southern Cross for bittering, Centennial for flavor, and Wakatu (a New Zealand hop) for aroma.”

The brew will be available at Pier 6’s new garden installation until reserves are gone, according to Tuesday’s announcement.

The restaurant, meanwhile, plans to host 10 drafts and 20 bottled beers with a focus on small batch local breweries, as part of the celebration, which will also include Pier 6 staff shucking a variety of fresh local oysters for sampling, as well as a chowder station featuring lobster, clam and vegetarian chowder.

The celebration kicks off at 8 p.m. on Sept. 12 and will be open to the public. To RSVP for the event, visit pier6anniversary.eventbrite.com.
