REVERE, MA — If you thought you saw a fireball in the sky Friday night, you're not alone. More than a hundred others reported seeing it, including folks in Cambridge, Newton, Arlington and Belmont nearby and as far as New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania and Canada. Someone named Eric M. captured the very bright meteor in the sky above Revere Friday night and later uploaded it to the American Meteor Society website.

The short video appears to have been a dashcam that caught the meteor streaking through the ink night sky reminiscent of a shooting star.

The video notes the time was 5:23 p.m.

There have been 3,289 reports of fireballs so far this year in the U.S. alone. Last year there were 3,520 reports, according to the American Meteorological Society, an organization which is dedicated to promoting and disseminating information about the atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic sciences.

One potential reason for the fireball? There are currently two meteor showers active.

Northern Taurids meteor showers are active from October 20 to December 10, this year. And the Leonids are also active through the end of the month. This means a notable increase in fireball activity. There seems to be a seven year periodicity with these fireballs, according to the society website.

And a fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, the society says on its website.
