Mass. Gaming Commission Holding Casino Talks This Week

The MGC could potentially have a ruling by week's end on whether to award a license to Wynn Resorts or Mohegan Sun.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission began a series of discussions Monday on where to potentially build a casino in the Boston area.

Set to meet daily throughout this week into a portion of next week, the MGC could potentially have a ruling on Friday on whether to issue a license to Wynn Resorts, which is looking to build a casino in Everett across the bridge from Charlestown’s Sullivan Square, or Mohegan Sun, which is eyeing space in Revere, Boston.com reported.

At its Monday meeting, MGC officials said developers for both Wynn and Mohegan “may need to accept significant changes to have a chance of claiming the state’s most coveted and lucrative casino license,” the Boston Globe reported.

The MGC said it expects to complete the discussions between Friday, Sept. 12 and Wednesday, Sept. 17. All discussions are being streamed live online at MassGaming.com here. To view the entire meeting schedule, click here.

The proposed Wynn casino has thus far caused debate among Charlestown residents and officials, with the MGC previously deeming Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts “suitable” to obtain a casino license in eastern Massachusetts. About 60 percent of the casino’s estimated traffic would come by way of Sullivan Square in Charlestown.
