Mayor, Legislators To Host Kennedy Center Fundraiser

The event will be held March 13 at the Knights of Columbus.

Mayor Thomas Menino, state legislators Sal DiDomenico and Gene O'Flaherty and City Councilor Sal LaMattina will be in Charlestown next week to host a special fundraiser for The Kennedy Center.

The reception will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall and will include light refreshments and beverages. A contribution of at least $100 per person is requested.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or by sending a check to the John F. Kennedy Family Service Center at 23 A Moulton Street, Charlestown, MA 02129.

The event will raise funds to support the services of The Kennedy Center, which includes early childhood education and day care, antipoverty services, translation services, elder care support and more. The center will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014.

The Kennedy Center's Head Start and Extended Day program, held at the Old Kent School at 23A Moulton St., gives low income families a preschool option right here in town, with educational activities for three- and four-year-old children.

The center's elder services include health promotions and screenings, transportation, daily meals and nutrition programs, recreational activities and more.

And the Kennedy Center offers a range of other programs, such as Chinese, Vietnamese and Spanish translation services and financial literacy help.

Menino, DiDomenico, O'Flaherty and LaMattina will serve as honorary hosts at the event, with special sponsors including Gerard Doherty, Dennis Kearney, Jim Collins, Richard Voke, Tom Birmingham, Jarrett Barrios, Anthony Galluccio, Diane Modica and Paul Scapicchio—all former elected leaders of the Charlestown community.

"Mr. Jim Collins, former legislator and current board member of the Kennedy Center, will present some opening remarks, introduce the Kennedy Center’s Board of Directors, hosts in attendance and thank all involved in managing and supporting the Kennedy Center’s mission over the past 49 years," Executive Director Terry William Kennedy said.

A donated gift basket will be auctioned off at the event's conclusion, Kennedy said.

Donations, including corporate contributions, will also be accepted by mail to the address above. Checks should be made payable to the "John F. Kennedy Family Service Center Inc."
