New Trial for Man Convicted of Shooting Boston Detective 5 Times in the Face

Sean Ellis was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting Detective John Mulligan in 1993.

A man who was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting a Boston police detective is expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday for a bail hearing in the case charging him with first-degree murder for the Sept. 26, 1993, shooting death of Boston Police Detective John Mulligan in Roslindale.

Ellis was convicted of first-degree murder at a 1995 trial, and that conviction was affirmed in 2000. Ellis’ first motion for a new trial was denied.

According to a recent press release, Sean’s second motion was granted last week after a judge found that his trial counsel did not have certain pieces of discovery, and not because any evidence contradicts or undercuts the evidence that led to his conviction.

Ellis remains guilty of possessing the firearm that killed Mulligan and the service weapon stolen from Mulligan’s body. Terry Patterson, his co-defendant, pleaded guilty to his role in the murder. Ellis’ convictions on two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm remain.
