Overheard in Charlestown: Share Your News Tips

A lot goes on around Charlestown on a weekly basis. Much of the buzz ends up on Patch as a news story, police brief, Q&A or announcement, but as much as we try, Patch can't always get to everything immediately, and sometimes we hear little tips about programs or problems that don't quite develop into full news stories.

That's where you come in. 

In "Overheard in Charlestown," we're highlighting some of the local news tidbits that don't always get major play. Know a local youth sports team that had a great game? Had a great time at a local event? See a celebrity around town? Need volunteers? Wondering when the city is going to address a certain issue? Plenty of Potholes

With the Boston Department of Public Works turning its focus to potholes around the city, it seems there are plenty of areas needing attention in Charlestown.

One Patch reader shared Monday: "Plenty of potholes to write about. There are many going over the Prison Point Bridge leaving Charlestown into Cambridge and many coming back on the opposite side from Cambridge into Charlestown. There are also many potholes around the Charlestown Sullivan Square rotary and the train tracks at Schraffts. These can do some serious damage to your car, especially the ones on the Prison Point Bridge. They are deep and getting larger!"

Big Turnout to 'Forks Over Knives' Screening

The Friends of the Charlestown Branch Library and Boston Organics presented a free screening and discussion of the documentary film “Forks Over Knives” on Thursday, March 14 at the library. Rumor has it the event was well attended, with standing room only—a sign that the topic of healthy, locally grown food is interesting to many here in Charlestown. Did you go to the screening? What did you take away from the discussion? 

Problems with Pickers

One local resident had this to say about people creating a mess as they look through trash bins for recyclables:

"Just wondering if anyone else is fed up with the trash pickers. This morning I went to pull the window shade up and witnessed a woman rip a trash bag down its side remove several items of clothing and then open a box that had previously contained checks to see if there were any left inside. This happens on my street every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and trash ends up all over the place. I am annoyed with the mess they leave behind but don't know if there is anything that can be done."
