Police Investigating After Man Struck By MBTA Bus In Winthrop

An 81-year-old Winthrop man is expected to survive after being hit by an MBTA bus operated by a Paul Revere Transportation employee.

WINTHROP, MA — An 81-year-old man from Winthrop is expected to survive after being hit by an MBTA bus Wednesday afternoon, transit police say.

Police responded to the scene at Hermon and Pauline Street in front of the town's police station after receiving reports of a man being struck by a bus around 3:30 p.m.

Winthrop firefighters were able to free the man, NBC10 first reported, who is now suffering from a serious leg injury, but is expected to survive.

Winthrop police are diverting traffic from Hermon and Pauline Streets while they work with MBTA transit police to investigate the cause of the crash.

"Paul Revere is fully cooperating with State Police, MBTA Police and Winthrop Police Department
investigators. Personnel files show the operator is current with all MBTA safety training guidelines and was not involved in any major incidents during seven years of service," A spokesperson from Paul Revere Transportation told Patch. "He will remain on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation."
