President Obama Salutes Boston Police Officer Shot in Face

The president said Monday that he honored Moynihan last year at the White House.

President Barack Obama has praised a Boston police officer who was injured in a Roxbury shootout Friday night.

CBS Boston reported that Obama, who called the downed officer a “hero,” began his speech at the dedication of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate by saluting Officer John Moynihan.

Moynihan remains hospitalized but is in improving condition after undergoing surgery to remove a bullet lodged below his ear. The president said he was relieved to learn that Moynihan is awake and talking.

The Iraq veteran was one of the first responders in Watertown following the gun battle against the Boston Marathon bombers in April 2013.
