Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist to Speak at College

Sonia Nazario, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, will visit Bunker Hill Community College to discuss her book, Enrique’s Journey, The Story of a Boy’s Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother, at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 7, in A300.  The event, which is part of the College’s One Book Program, is free and open to the public. 

Enrique’s Journey tells the true story of a boy whose mother, too poor to feed her children, leaves Honduras to work in the United States. Her aim is to send money home so that her son, Enrique, then five-years-old, can eat better and attend school. Enrique braves unimaginable hardships to travel alone from Honduras to the United States to find his mother. To write the series for The Los Angeles Times that became the book, Nazario took the same journey herself. 

Nazario has spent 20 years reporting and writing about social issues including hunger, drug addiction and immigration.  In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Nazario has won the George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting, the Grand Prize of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Guillermo Martinez-Marquez Award. 

Faculty and staff working with the One Book program choose one book to focus on in discussions throughout the academic year. Previous books selected have included Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams by Alfred Lubrano and Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder.
