Remaining 'Salt and Pepper' Towers to be Removed
MassDOT will shift pedestrian and cyclist access along the bridge before setting up a work zone.

Crews will get to removing the remaining “salt and pepper” towers from the center of Longfellow Bridge this weekend.

Two other 58-foot towers on the historic Charles River span were removed last March as part of the estimated $255 million bridge repair project.
All the towers will come back after being taken apart block-by-block, catalogued, cleaned and repaired.

Each of the four towers originally cost $100,000 to build. The towers were placed on the bridge in 1907 when the connection between Boston and Cambridge was first completed.
The first two upstream towers will be reassembled later this year, officials said.
